The Wheel of Time Gets an Animated Reboot with Series, Movies, and Game — But There’s an Important Detail

Iwot Studios announces an animated series, movies, and game based on The Wheel of Time, in partnership with Thomas Wu from Arcane. The project targets a younger audience and global expansion.

The Wheel of Time (*The Wheel of Time*), one of the greatest fantasy sagas in world literature, is officially returning — but in a very different form from what fans knew until now. iwot Studios, the holder of the rights to Robert Jordan’s work, announced that it is developing a new animated series, animated feature films, and a video game set in the franchise’s universe. The news, however, comes with a detail that divides opinions within the fandom.

The bet is clearly aimed at a younger audience and the global expansion of the IP (*Intellectual Property*), which represents a significant strategic shift from the live-action production that was shown on Prime Video and canceled after three seasons. Furthermore, the new projects still have no defined distribution platform, meaning the franchise may completely break away from Amazon.

## What iwot Studios announced about The Wheel of Time

iwot Studios revealed that it is working on three main fronts: an animated series, animated feature films, and a video game for PC and mobile. All projects are being developed in partnership with Thomas Wu, a professional known for his work on the Netflix animated series *Arcane* and his involvement with Riot Games, the creator of *League of Legends*. Initiate Entertainment, from Anthony Borquez, is also participating in the productions.

According to the announcement, the projects are described as aimed at “young audiences” and designed to “expand the global presence of the franchise.” The game, in turn, aims to “expand the franchise’s reach across platforms and engage fans around the world.”

## Strategic shift: from live-action to the animated universe

The live-action series of *The Wheel of Time* was produced by Prime Video with the clear goal of competing for the same audience hungry for epic fantasy that consumed *Game of Thrones* and showed interest in *The Witcher* (Netflix) and *The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power* (also from Amazon). However, after three seasons, the project was canceled.

Now, the approach changes completely. Instead of competing directly with high-budget live-action productions, iwot Studios bets on animation as a way to attract a new generation of fans and make Robert Jordan’s universe more accessible. The decision may indicate an attempt to build a solid audience base before any future investments in live-action.

## Thomas Wu and the experience with Arcane

The hiring of Thomas Wu is one of the most relevant points of the announcement. The professional has proven experience in adapting video game universes into high-quality animation, having participated in the success of *Arcane*, a series based on *League of Legends* that won over audiences and critics on Netflix.

“I see a huge opportunity to expand *The Wheel of Time* into fully authentic, integrated, interactive, and animated narrative experiences,” Wu said in an official statement. “The depth of the mythology provides a foundation for sustained, multiplatform growth of the franchise.”

## Behind the scenes of the production

Rick Selvage, CEO of iwot Studios, and Larry Mondragon, Director of Operations, are leading this new phase of the franchise. Both had already produced the live-action series and now coordinate the transition to the animated and interactive format. In their words, Thomas Wu “has consistently demonstrated the ability to transform narratives into global entertainment franchises.”

“His track record at the intersection of narrative, technology, and franchise architecture makes him particularly qualified to help expand *The Wheel of Time* into new immersive formats,” Selvage stated.

## The literary foundation: 14 books and a vast mythology

*The Wheel of Time* is based on the epic fantasy of Robert Jordan, told over 14 novels published between 1990 and 2013. Jordan died in 2007 before finishing the story but left detailed notes for fellow writer Brandon Sanderson to complete the saga. Sanderson wrote the final three books of the series.

It is worth noting that Sanderson recently signed an unprecedented deal with Apple TV+ to adapt his own fantasy universe, the *Cosmere*, for film and television. The move suggests that the market for literary fantasy adaptations remains hot and competitive.

## What the future holds for the franchise

Despite the enthusiasm shown by the directors of iwot Studios, there are still many unknowns. The animated projects and the game have no defined distributors or streaming platforms, leaving it open where the audience will be able to watch and play these new productions.

The fan community, in turn, shows mixed reactions. Part of the fandom celebrates the possibility of an animated adaptation that could be more faithful to the vastness of the original material — considered by many to be difficult to adapt in live-action due to the complexity of the plot and the number of characters. Others, however, express frustration with the cancellation of the live-action series and question whether animation will be able to capture the mature essence of the books.

## Fan reaction and debate about the target audience

In the comments of specialized publications, several fans expressed divergent opinions. Some highlight that animation can be the ideal format to faithfully represent the magic and fantastic worlds of *The Wheel of Time*. Others question the decision to direct the franchise to a younger audience, since the books contain adult and complex themes that, according to them, do not fit well into an approach aimed at children.

The debate reflects a recurring dilemma in adaptations of major franchises: how to balance faithfulness to the original material with the need to win new audiences and ensure long-term commercial viability.
