Tim Burton and Margot Robbie announce remake of 1950s classic

Tim Burton and Margot Robbie‘s production company are joining forces for an ambitious project in 2026: a remake of the cult science fiction classic Attack of the 50 Foot Woman (1958). The screenwriters behind the Netflix global phenomenon, KPop Demon Hunters, Danya Jimenez and Hannah McMechan, have been confirmed to write the script for the new version, as revealed by The Hollywood Reporter. The production will be developed by LuckyChap, Margot Robbie’s company, who is also expected to star in the film, although this is not yet official.
This move comes right after the massive success of KPop Demon Hunters, voted the most-watched film of all time on Netflix and winner of major awards. Therefore, expectations for this remake are huge. The project, which does not yet have a defined release date, marks Tim Burton’s return to a science fiction narrative with a touch of dark humor and his characteristic visuals. The central idea, as the screenwriters have hinted, is to explore the revenge of a 50-foot woman betrayed by her husband, a theme that promises to resonate with today’s audience.
From B-Movie Classic to High-End Production
The original film, a low-budget production from the 50s, became a cult symbol by telling the story of a socialite who, after an extraterrestrial encounter, grows to gigantic proportions to confront her unfaithful spouse. The new version, however, arrives with a completely different pedigree. In addition to the in-demand screenwriting duo and Margot Robbie’s production, Tim Burton takes the helm, bringing his unique aesthetic to reinvent the story.
In other words, the project jumps from the B-movie niche to become a major Hollywood production. In a statement, Jimenez and McMechan said they are “obsessed with the idea of a fifty-foot woman causing chaos because a man betrayed her,” adding that they believe many people will relate. This modern, full-of-attitude approach is one of the new version’s great assets.
Despite the enthusiasm, Burton himself has already shown caution. In 2024, he commented on the instability of projects in Hollywood, recalling ideas that never got off the ground, like a Superman film. Therefore, the director prefers to only celebrate when he is effectively on the film set. Meanwhile, fans eagerly await more news about the cast and, especially, the confirmation of Margot Robbie as the enraged giant.
