Kūbo Ibuki to have new manga in February after original work ends

Kūbo Ibuki, the acclaimed political-military manga created by Kaiji Kawaguchi in collaboration with journalist Osamu Eya, will receive a new series in early 2026. The information was confirmed by publisher Shogakukan, which announced that the sequel, set after the Senkaku battle, will arrive in the pages of the Big Comic magazine on February 25. This is highly relevant news for Brazilian fans of the genre, as the original work, winner of the Shogakukan award and with over 3 million printed copies, has gained a dedicated audience for its dense narrative about geopolitical conflicts.
The new series promises to explore the consequences of the so-called “great game,” a conflict where major powers dispute sovereignty. Meanwhile, the final chapter of the previous series is scheduled to arrive in Japanese bookstores on January 30, with the release of the 18th and final compiled volume. This way, fans won’t have to wait long to revisit the complex universe created by Kawaguchi, which has even inspired a live-action adaptation in 2019.
Successful trajectory and adaptations
The original Kūbo Ibuki series was published in Big Comic between 2014 and 2019, totaling 13 volumes that have been completed since June 2020. In addition to the prestigious Shogakukan Award for Best General Manga, won in 2018, Kaiji Kawaguchi’s legacy extends to other media. The manga The Silent Service, for example, by the same author, spawned a successful franchise with two live-action series, with the second season, Chinmoku no Kantai Season 1: Tokyowan Daikaisen, premiering on Amazon Prime Video in February 2024.
Therefore, the announcement of this new series not only reignites interest in an acclaimed work but also strengthens the author’s adaptation ecosystem. With a unique narrative style that blends journalism and fiction, Kawaguchi remains a key name for those who appreciate stories with political and strategic depth. Thus, the expectation is that the new phase of Kūbo Ibuki will attract both loyal readers and a new audience, further consolidating the creator’s importance in the contemporary manga scene.
