ABEMA Launches Project PRISMation to Fund Independent Animators

The Japanese streaming service ABEMA announced in the first week of January 2026 a new project aimed at independent animators from around the world. Called “Project PRISMation,” the initiative is a direct collaboration with creators, especially individuals or small teams that already produce web animations, with the goal of developing original anime pilot films. The project already has a start date for showcasing its work: the first three short films, created by artists from different countries, will be released in consecutive weeks starting January 16th.
ABEMA’s move is more than just a content release. In practice, it symbolizes a significant investment in the future of the animation industry, seeking new voices outside of major studios. The name “Prismation” comes from the fusion of the words “Prism” and “Animation,” representing, according to the company, a space where diverse talents come together to shine. With plans to open a new call for creators inside and outside Japan as early as May this year, the project promises to energize the global independent scene.
Meet the First Selected Projects
Among the works launching Project PRISMation is a colorful and bizarre cooking show hosted by the characters P-chan, C-chan, and U-chan. Additionally, fans can look forward to “Gluttomy,” a story following Appel, a hardworking student at an elite private high school, and his encounter with the mysterious pink-haired twins Glista and Glyde. The creator duo rapitus also makes an appearance with the 2D short “Children Under the Reed Field,” which follows the peculiar Horrors family, consisting of a vampire father, a ghost mother, and their daughter.
The level of those involved is noteworthy, as some names have experience in major productions. This includes Zemyata, who worked on the music video “Yoru wa Honoka” for artist Eve, and Moriyama, who served as an episode director on hits like “Scott Pilgrim Takes Off” and “DAN DA DAN.” Thus, the project manages to unite both established creators and entirely new talents, offering a powerful showcase for their work.
A Window of Opportunity in 2026
ABEMA’s initiative arrives at a time of global anime expansion, with the Brazilian audience increasingly eager for original and diverse content. By funding pilots, the platform not only discovers fresh stories but also tests the commercial potential of these ideas before investing in full series. Therefore, this is a valuable entry point for animators dreaming of seeing their projects reach the screen. Meanwhile, fans can expect unique narratives and innovative visuals, straight from the source of independent creativity that promises to color the year 2026.
