Towerborne Abandons Free-to-Play Model for 1.0 Launch on PS5

Towerborne, the action-adventure game from developer Stoic, finally has a date for its full release. The big news, however, is not just the official launch, but a strategic change that promises to please many players. Scheduled for February 26, 2026, the title leaves the Xbox Game Preview program and abandons its original free-to-play model to become a single-purchase game, with offline and online cooperative modes included.
This radical change in direction, announced by Stoic itself, completely transforms the proposition of Towerborne. Instead of a continuous service requiring a constant connection, players will now be able to acquire the complete experience permanently. Version 1.0 will arrive simultaneously for Xbox, PC (via Steam), and, as a new addition, for the PlayStation 5 console, expanding its reach at the beginning of this year, 2026.
A Different Bet in the Gaming Landscape
The decision to migrate from a free-to-play model to a single-purchase game is a bold move in the current market, dominated by live services. Stoic seems to have been listening to its audience since the early access period, which began in September 2024. Jon Clarke from the XboxEra website had already praised the game’s potential in his initial analysis, highlighting that Towerborne is “cool, chaotic, stunning, and above all, fun.” Thus, the change can be seen as a vote of confidence in the complete experience offered, without the pressure of microtransactions.
In addition to the new business model, version 1.0 promises to consolidate all the content and adjustments developed with the community over more than a year. Thanks to this constant feedback, Stoic hopes to deliver a polished and satisfying adventure. Therefore, the February release is not just an update, but the materialization of the creators’ final vision, which now includes a legion of PlayStation fans. Thus, the game has everything it needs to establish itself as a solid option for those seeking accessible and well-executed cooperative action.
