Alien: Romulus arrives on Netflix and revives franchise with new young cast

Alien: Romulus, the 2024 film that revived Disney’s famous science fiction franchise, has a new home. Since the beginning of this year, 2026, the production that grossed an impressive $350 million at the global box office has been available for exclusive streaming on Netflix’s catalog in Brazil. Directed by Fede Álvarez, the film positions itself as a new entry point into the Alien universe, as it does not directly follow the saga of Ellen Ripley nor the plot of Prometheus.
The story features a completely new group of characters, notably younger, who find themselves trapped in a classic franchise setting: a confined space with a Xenomorph. Set between the events of the first ‘Alien’ and its sequel ‘Aliens’, the film won over both critics, with an 80% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and audiences, who gave an even higher score of 88%. This success, which surpassed a production budget of $80 million, was so significant that Disney has already put a sequel in development.
A new breath of life for the franchise
Thanks to the focus on young protagonists unconnected to the previous films, ‘Alien: Romulus’ managed to inject new thematic layers and a revitalizing perspective. Fede Álvarez, who co-wrote the script, has already stated that he does not intend to direct the sequel, following the path of legendary directors in the series who made only one film each. However, he and his writing partner secured the future of the characters they created by writing the script for the continuation to avoid a tragic fate like that of the characters Hicks and Newt in ‘Alien 3’.
With a promising cast that includes Cailee Spaeny and Isabela Merced, the film represents the first Alien chapter released under Disney’s banner, following the acquisition of 20th Century Fox. Its arrival on Netflix in January 2026 is great news for Brazilian fans who were waiting to relive the space terror or discover this new adventure. In this way, the platform solidifies itself as an essential destination for lovers of quality sci-fi and horror.
