Baldur’s Gate 3 will not come to Nintendo Switch 2, confirms creator

Baldur’s Gate 3, the acclaimed RPG from Larian Studios, will not be released for the Nintendo Switch 2. The confirmation came directly from the studio’s founder, Swen Vincke, during an online Q&A session held last week. The reason, according to Vincke, is outside the developer’s control, indicating a decision that involves Wizards of the Coast, the owner of the Dungeons & Dragons franchise. This news arrives at a time of high anticipation for Nintendo’s recently launched hybrid console, frustrating thousands of Brazilian fans who were hoping to play the title on a portable device.
Projected to sell millions of copies, the game could have found a huge audience in Brazil, where the appeal of portable consoles has always been strong. However, due to a complex post-launch relationship between Larian and Wizards of the Coast, this port became unfeasible. In other words, even with the technical capability proven by versions like the one on Steam Deck, bureaucratic and contractual factors prevented the epic adventure from reaching Nintendo’s new hardware in early 2026.
A Wish That Could Not Be Fulfilled
Swen Vincke’s statement was brief, yet revealing. “We would have loved to, but it wasn’t our decision to make,” he said. This short phrase makes it clear that the developer’s desire existed but encountered external obstacles. Since the game’s enormous success in 2023, rumors about a sequel under pressure from Wizards of the Coast have always lingered. As a result, Larian chose to proceed with an original project for their next game, a move that may have cooled the partnership. Therefore, asking the company to return to the Baldur’s Gate 3 code to create a new version seems far from the current reality.
For the Brazilian player, this means missing the chance to experience this rich adventure anywhere. The PS5 version, for example, showed that the game can shine on consoles, with impressive graphics and solid performance. The Xbox, despite an initial delay, also received a complete version. Thus, the Switch 2 would remain as the only major modern platform left out, breaking what many called the availability “trifecta.”
What Now? The Future of RPGs on the Switch 2
Despite the blow, the situation is not completely closed forever. There is still a possibility, albeit remote, of Wizards of the Coast outsourcing the conversion work to another studio. However, considering the technical complexity and Larian’s unique artistic vision, this would be a risky option. Meanwhile, Brazilian RPG fans will have to settle for the current platforms or hope for a change of winds in the future. The truth is, at least for now, taking a deep breath and accepting reality is the only option. The legacy of Baldur’s Gate 3 remains colossal, but its journey, unfortunately, will not pass through the Nintendo Switch 2.
