Chainsaw Man and Demon Slayer experience drop in Japanese box office

Chainsaw Man and Demon Slayer, two of the most popular anime franchises at the moment, are facing a natural decline in Japanese box office after weeks of great success. The movie ‘Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc’ dropped from 4th to 8th place in its 15th weekend, between December 26 and 28, 2025. Meanwhile, ‘Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle – Akaza Sairai’, the first film of a new trilogy, fell from 8th to 10th place in its 24th week of screening. This movement reflects the normal exhibition cycle, but does not diminish the shine of the historic achievements that both titles have already achieved.
The drop occurs due to the long screening time, as the productions have accumulated millions of viewers since their releases. The Chainsaw Man movie, for example, has already sold more than 6.5 million tickets and raised over 10 billion yen (about R$ 315 million) in Japan after 103 days in theaters. The production, whose international rights were acquired by Sony, has already reached theaters in the United States in October and eagerly awaits its official release in Brazil.
Impressive numbers
Behind the simple change in ranking, there are absolutely colossal numbers. The Demon Slayer movie, despite its current position, is already the highest-grossing anime of all time worldwide, also being the first Japanese film to surpass the 100 billion yen mark (about R$ 3.15 billion) globally. In this way, it surpassed historical records, such as those of the classic ‘Spirited Away’ by Hayao Miyazaki.
The film ‘Demon Slayer: Mugen Train’, from the same franchise, remains the highest-grossing film in Japan’s history. Thus, the small drop in weekly positions is just a detail in the face of the gigantic legacy that these animations are building. For Brazilian fans, the wait is for confirmation of release dates in local theaters, a move that should further heat up the animation market in the country in 2026.
