The new Netflix horror series, Something Horrible Will Happen, arrived on the platform this March 2026 and is already dominating conversations with its disturbing finale. Produced by the Duffer Brothers, the story follows Rachel (Camila Morrone), who senses an imminent tragedy during the week of her wedding to Nicky (Adam DiMarco). What seemed like mere pre-wedding jitters turns out to be an ancient curse tied to a sinister deal made with Death itself hundreds of years ago.
The story revolves around a blood debt initiated when a desperate bride begged for her beloved's life to be returned. The entity accepted the deal but imposed a cruel condition: all descendants must marry their true soulmates before sunset. If anyone calls off the union or chooses the wrong partner, the entire lineage suffers fatal consequences. Meanwhile, an immortal figure known as the Witness⬝ watches the family's romantic failures with sadistic pleasure.
The pact and Rachel's choice
Within the rules established by the series, what defines a soulmate is not fate but the absolute conviction of the person carrying the curse. Rachel harbors doubts about her feelings for Nicky, putting everyone in immediate danger. She has the chance to back out, but that would curse her fiancé's family forever. So the protagonist decides to face her fears and go through with the ceremony, believing that love can break the supernatural cycle imposed by the entity.
The cruel fate at the altar
At the season's climax, Nicky decides to call off the marriage because he doubts the curse is real, ignoring his bride's desperate warnings. As a result of this disbelief, the sun sets and the punishment hits the young man's family brutally, causing several members to bleed to death at the altar. Due to the breach of the agreement, Rachel herself ends up dying, but the series delivers a shocking final twist that changes the narrative's course.
Right after her death, Rachel is revived by Death to take on a new eternal role in the world of the living. She becomes the new Witness, condemned to observe all future weddings and tragedies of Nicky's lineage for all eternity. Thus, the cycle of suffering continues, leaving the groom devastated and confused while his former beloved now occupies the place of the immortal observer she once feared to encounter.
