The Master of Philosophical Cinema Returns: Mamoru Oshii Takes the Helm of a Classic Giant Robot Franchise

Thanks to works like Ghost in the Shell and Patlabor 2, Mamoru Oshii is widely regarded as one of anime’s greatest filmmakers. He blends stunning animation with dense philosophical themes. However, it’s been a few years since his last major work. Oshii’s most recent film was 2008’s The Sky Crawlers, and his newest directorial effort was the 2021 TV series Vlad Love. Meanwhile, according to Wikipedia, his next project is an adaptation of Baku Yumemakura’s Chimera novels. But Anime News Network has just revealed a major update: Oshii is directing the next installment of the acclaimed Armored Trooper Votoms franchise.

While perhaps not as globally famous as Gundam, Armored Trooper Votoms is a classic example of a “real robot” mecha subgenre title. Other similar titles include Patlabor, Gasaraki, and the original Macross series. In these series, which can be considered “hard” science fiction, the mecha are not fantastical machines like the Evas from Neon Genesis Evangelion. Instead, they are mass-produced machines, with a much more realistic portrayal of their capabilities and the realities of war.

The original Armored Trooper Votoms series was created by Ryōsuke Takahashi and premiered in 1983. Since then, there have been numerous sequels and spin-offs, the most recent being 2011’s Armored Trooper Votoms: Alone Again. Almost nothing is known about Oshii’s entry into the series, aside from its title: Armored Trooper Votoms: The Grey Witch. It is presumed the project will bear the director’s trademarks: obsessive attention to detail and plenty of heavy, existential dialogue. Fans hope the result will be closer to the genius of Patlabor 2 than the slower pace of The Sky Crawlers. This announcement rekindles excitement for lovers of philosophical anime and realistic mecha, promising a unique fusion of deep ideas with visceral robotic action.
