“Leave or I’ll Kill You”: Snape Actor Reveals Death Threats in Harry Potter

Paapa Essiedu, HBO’s new Snape, broke his silence about the violent death threats and racist attacks he received after his casting in Harry Potter.

Actor **Paapa Essiedu**, cast to play the iconic Professor Snape in HBO’s new *Harry Potter* series, revealed he has been receiving death threats and racist attacks since the announcement of his role. In a recent interview this March 2026, the 35-year-old star detailed the level of toxicity he faces on social media, where users claim he should not play the character because he is black. According to the actor, direct messages on Instagram include promises of physical violence and home invasion, creating a hostile behind-the-scenes environment for the mega-production.

Despite the severity of the attacks, Essiedu stated that the offenses ended up serving as fuel for his performance, as he wants to be a reference for representation for children who never saw themselves in Hogwarts. He explained that while growing up, he used to imagine himself flying on broomsticks in the wizarding world, and now has the chance to make that real for other young people. Because of this purpose, the actor assured that he will not be intimidated by teenagers who spew hate on the internet, even choosing not to formally report the profiles to authorities at this time.

The controversy gained new layers shortly after Essiedu signed an open letter in defense of trans rights, which generated indirect friction with author J.K. Rowling. However, Rowling used her social media to clarify that she does not have the power to fire actors and that she would not jeopardize anyone’s livelihood over differences of opinion. Scheduled to premiere in 2027, the series requires a ten-year contract, meaning the actor will be 45 years old upon completing the project. Therefore, he sees the role as a lifelong commitment, accepting that his routine will change drastically over the next decade.
