O Globo de Ouro de 2020 foi palco mais uma vez de uma noite para poucas surpresas e muito discurso político, com destaque para as falas das atrizes Michelle Williams e Kate McKinnon. A premiação também foi marcada pelo reconhecimento do jovem talento Ramy Youssef, que venceu na categoria de melhor ator de comédia e pela falta de estatuetas para o aclamado O Irlandês de Martin Scorsese – que não faturou nenhum Globo de Ouro.
Mas o destaque da festa ficou no discurso inspirador da atriz e comediante do Saturday Night Live Kate McKinnon. Ela apresentou o prêmio especial Carol Burnett, que este ano homenageou a também atriz e comediante Ellen DeGeneres. Kate agradeceu à Ellen por ter dado a oportunidade da comunidade LGBT em Hollywood. “Ela arriscou tudo e sua carreira para contar a verdade, e ela sofreu imensamente por isso. Claro que as atitudes mudam, mas só porque pessoas como Ellen pularam na fora para fazer essas mudanças acontecerem. E se eu não tivesse a visto na TV, eu não poderia ter pensado que eu poderia também estar na TV. Eles não deixam LGBTs irem para a TV! E mais que isso, eu teria pensado que eu era uma alienígena, que não deveria nem estar aqui,” disse a atriz, emocionada.
Phoebe Waller-Bridge também foi a grande vencedora da noite. Ela não só ganhou o prêmio de melhor atriz de comédia com Fleabag, como a própria série levou o prêmio de melhor do ano na categoria comédia.
Com premiações bem distribuídas, a HBO e Hulu ainda levaram uma pequena vantagem entre os outros canais e serviços de streaming. A emissora de TV a cabo emplacou as séries Succession e Chernobyl na lista de vencedores, já streaming americano Hulu consagrou Ramy e The Act.
