NASA releases list of sci-fi movies with scientific accuracy

The NASA, the U.S. space agency, has published an official list of science fiction films that stand out for their scientific accuracy. The announcement, made in early 2026, highlights productions that, besides entertaining, serve as valuable educational tools. That is because these films plausibly portray complex concepts of physics, engineering, and space exploration, bringing topics once restricted to specialists closer to the general public.

According to the agency, the initiative’s main goal is to use the power of cinema to spark interest in science and technology, especially among young people. That is why the list brings together titles that consulted specialists or pursued a high degree of realism in production. Films like The Martian and Interstellar thus take center stage not only for their gripping narratives, but also for their commitment to science.

Movies that passed NASA’s test

Leading the list is The Martian, starring Matt Damon. The film is frequently praised for its care in depicting real survival challenges, such as growing food, communicating with Earth, and logistics in a hostile environment. Likewise, Apollo 13, based on real events, is cited as an almost documentary-like example of the tension and technical procedures of a space rescue mission.

Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar was also recognized for its ambitious work with relativity concepts and black holes. NASA notes, however, that the film blends established science with more speculative elements to serve the plot. Another classic on the list is Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey, a pioneer in its obsessive attention to technological details long before they became reality.

Finally, the agency also mentions Contact, a film exploring the search for extraterrestrial intelligence on solid scientific ground. The selection proves it is possible to combine cinematic drama with factual rigor, creating stories that inspire and educate. NASA thus hopes this list will encourage people not only to watch good movies, but also to look at the sky with greater curiosity and understanding.
