Paul Feig to Direct ‘Detention’ Horror Film for Blumhouse and Atomic Monster

Director Paul Feig, known for comedies like Bridesmaids and Ghostbusters, will direct the horror feature Detention. The announcement was made by Blumhouse and Atomic Monster, two of the biggest producers in the genre.

The project marks Feig’s first foray into horror, a segment he has always shown interest in exploring. The news was reported by The Hollywood Reporter this Friday (the 10th).

A change of course in film

Paul Feig built his career in comedy and comedic drama, with hits like Spy and the series The Office. Now, he is betting on a genre that demands tension and atmosphere.

“I have always been a horror fan and I admire the work of Blumhouse and Atomic Monster. I am excited to bring my vision to Detention,” the director said in a statement.

The plot of Detention has not yet been revealed, but sources close to the production indicate that the script revolves around a school detention that turns into a supernatural nightmare.

Blumhouse and Atomic Monster together

The partnership between Blumhouse and Atomic Monster has already produced hits like Insidious and The Conjuring. The two companies joining forces for Detention reinforces the bet on talent outside the obvious.

Jason Blum, founder of Blumhouse, said: “Paul has a unique eye for characters and humor, and we believe he will bring a fresh approach to horror.”

Filming is expected to begin later in 2026, with release estimated for 2027. The cast has not yet been announced.

Market expectations

The news drew mixed reactions from fans and critics. While some celebrate the bold move, others question whether Feig can deliver the suspense the genre demands.

Experts point out that the choice may be strategic: attracting audiences who do not usually watch traditional horror, expanding the viewer base. The script remains under wraps, but betting on a comedy director reflects Hollywood’s trend of blending genres.

With Detention, Paul Feig enters new territory, and the result could define the next steps of his career. Blumhouse and Atomic Monster, meanwhile, remain committed to their mission of renewing horror with unexpected voices.
