Vincent Paronnaud, the French filmmaker Oscar-nominated for Persepolis, is back on Brazilian cinema screens this January 2026. This time, he directs Angelo in the Magical Forest, a new animation that premiered worldwide at the Cannes Film Festival and now arrives in Brazil. The film tells the story of Angelo, a ten-year-old boy who gets separated from his parents and embarks on an adventure through a forest inhabited by extraordinary creatures. For Paronnaud, the production’s central message resonates with both children and adults, making the project especially suited for family screenings.
In an exclusive interview, the director explained that the story works on multiple levels. While children are enchanted by the adventure and fantastical beings, adults can reflect on deeper themes such as resilience and self-discovery. That is why the film seeks to build a bridge between generations, offering entertainment and reflection for everyone. The production is co-directed with Alexis Ducord and reaches Brazilian theaters after acclaim at one of the world’s most prestigious festivals.
A Journey of Self-Discovery
The plot begins simply, during Angelo’s visit to his grandmother. However, a careless moment by his parents on the road triggers the main adventure. Left behind at a service station, the boy decides to take a shortcut to rejoin them, entering a mysterious forest. This setting, far from frightening, proves to be a place of learning and unexpected encounters. In this way, the story unfolds as a metaphor for growing up and facing challenges with courage, even when alone.
Paronnaud, who already won over international critics with his earlier work alongside Marjane Satrapi, sees in this animation a natural continuation of his interest in universal human stories. Despite its fantastical tone, Angelo’s conflicts echo real experiences, such as fear of the unknown and homesickness. The film thus promises not only to enchant visually, but also to move Brazilian audiences emotionally, establishing European animation as a strong contender in today’s film market.
