Bethesda Game Studios has revealed that the long-awaited "next-gen" update for Fallout 76 will be released this summer [June to August 2026], more than six years after the launch of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S consoles. The announcement came with the patch notes for the "Infestations" update, detailing significant improvements for players on the latest consoles.
What to Expect from the "Next-Gen" Update
Bethesda confirmed that the "next-gen" version of Fallout 76 will allow players to enjoy an optimized experience. The public testing period for this update will begin in June 2026. The final version is expected to be available "later this summer."
The "next-gen" update will be accessible to all Fallout 76 owners. Players will be able to download the test versions for Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5 directly from the digital stores. After the testing is complete, the full release will occur still this summer.
Detailed Improvements and Features
The promised improvements include:
Optimized Performance: Targeting 60 FPS on Xbox Series X|S, PS5, and PS5 Pro. Enhanced Render Distance: Better visualization of distant scenarios. Improved Shadows: More detailed and realistic shadows. 4K Resolution: Available on compatible displays on Xbox Series X, Xbox One X, and PS5 Pro. VRR (Variable Refresh Rate): Support on compatible displays on Xbox Series S, Xbox Series X, PS5, and PS5 Pro. 1440p Resolution: For PS5 and PS4 Pro, while previous-generation platforms will maintain 1080p.
The original game was released in 2018 for PC, PS4, and Xbox One. At the time, Bethesda chose to focus on supporting existing platforms rather than releasing an immediate patch for the new-generation consoles that hit the market in late 2020. This left many fans eagerly awaiting news about optimization.
Content of the "Infestations" Update
In addition to performance improvements, the "Infestations" update brings new features to the world of Appalachia. Players will be challenged to find and eliminate "infestations" in various locations. By completing these missions, participants will be able to acquire 4-star rewards.
The update also introduces new seasonal fish for summer, autumn, winter, and spring. These fish can be used in new seasonal recipes starting June 23, 2026. A new C.A.M.P. item, the Pet Deathclaw, will also be available through a special pack.
Season 25, titled "Appalachia Under Siege," is also part of this update, offering new seasonal rewards to players who help protect the region. The patch, version 1.7.25.13, will have varying sizes: 10 GB for PC (Steam), 28.1 GB for PC (Microsoft Store) and Xbox, and 27.4 GB for PlayStation.
