‘The Child’ (El Niño): New Netflix Drama Starring Belén Cuesta and Karra Elejalde Gets Theater and Streaming Release Dates

Netflix has officially set the release date for one of the most anticipated and sensitive cinematic dramas of the 2026 European audiovisual scene. The feature film The Child (originally titled El niño in Spain), written and directed by acclaimed filmmaker Mariano Barroso, will first arrive in select theaters on November 13, 2026, ahead of its exclusive global premiere on the streaming platform set for November 27, 2026.

Starring two of the biggest names in contemporary Spanish cinema — prestigious Goya Award winners Belén Cuesta (A Trincheira Infinita, La Casa de Papel) and Karra Elejalde (Oito Sobrenomes Vascos, Enquanto Durar a Guerra) —, the film tackles with delicacy and emotional power the wounds left by one of the most painful tragedies in Spain’s recent history. Here at O Santuário Geek, in our movies and major productions section, we break down the historical origins, literary basis, and aesthetic vision of this project.

The Literary Source by Fernando Aramburu and the Ortuella Tragedy

The production is a direct film adaptation of the acclaimed novel El niño, published by renowned writer Fernando Aramburu — internationally recognized as the mind behind the best-seller Pátria (a work adapted with resounding success by HBO). In El niño, Aramburu stepped away from armed political tensions to dive into the psychological and community aftermath of the fateful gas explosion that occurred on October 23, 1980, at the Marcelino Ugalde primary school, located in the village of Ortuella, in the province of Biscay (Basque Country).

The fatal accident killed 50 children and three teachers, leaving the community and all of Spain in a state of absolute shock. In the story, the plot does not explore the disaster from a sensationalist or courtroom angle, but through the intimacy of Mariaje (Belén Cuesta) and Nicasio (Karra Elejalde), the mother and grandfather of one of the boys who lost their lives at the school.

The narrative follows the routine of Nicasio, an elderly retired man who visits his grandson’s grave at the hillside cemetery every week, while searching, alongside his daughter Mariaje, for a singular and painful way to find meaning in their own existence again and turn paralyzing grief into emotional survival.

A Prestigious Crew and a Top-Caliber Cast

The film marks the long-awaited return of Mariano Barroso to feature-film directing. Barroso has built one of the most respected careers in Spain, having won the Goya Award for Best Adapted Screenplay for Todas las mujeres and directed internationally prestigious series such as La línea invisible and El día de mañana. The production is signed by Barroso himself alongside veteran producer Rafael Portela, under the Umea Films banner.

In addition to the central performances by Cuesta and Elejalde, the supporting cast brings together established talents from European theater and television:

  1. Pep Ambròs: Known for standout performances in the miniseries O Corpo em Chamas and the feature film A Oliveira.
  2. Raquel Ferri: A standout in the psychological thriller As Linhas Tortas de Deus (also a Netflix hit).
  3. Joan Solé: Recently praised for the crime drama Nos Vemos em Outra Vida.
  4. Álex Infantes: A young child actor breakout from the suspense drama O Cuco de Cristal, who plays the little boy whose memory lights up the film.

Release Strategy: From Theaters to the Global Catalog

Netflix’s chosen model — securing an exclusive theatrical run two weeks before the digital release — is a statement of artistic intent. The window in traditional Spanish theaters starting November 13 qualifies the film to compete in the season’s major festivals and awards (such as the 2027 Goya Awards and the Feroz Awards).

For subscribers around the world, its arrival on Netflix on November 27, 2026 consolidates the platform’s continued bet on high-impact European auteur dramas, following acclaimed successes such as J.A. Bayona’s A Sociedade da Neve.
