End of an Era: Three Super Smash Bros. Melee Legends Announce Retirement

Mango, Cody Schwab, and aMSa, legends of the Super Smash Bros. Melee competitive scene, announce their retirement, marking the end of an era for the 25-year-old game.

**Super Smash Bros. Melee**, the Nintendo fighting game that turns 25 in 2026, is facing a historic turning point this January. Three of the biggest names in the world competition – Joseph “Mango” Marquez, Cody Schwab, and Masaya “aMSa” Chikamoto – have announced their departures or “soft retirements” from the competitive scene. This change is due to a combination of factors, such as burnout, lack of sponsorship, and new professional focuses, and promises to completely redefine the future of tournaments for one of the world’s longest-running games.

The announcements, made in live streams and public statements over the past weeks, represent a massive loss of talent and charisma for the community. Mango, banned for a year in 2025, stated he has no intention of returning. Meanwhile, Cody Schwab, the number 1 player in the most recent ranking, cited burnout and financial problems. As for aMSa, the Yoshi master, will prioritize his career outside of gaming. Together, they formed a fundamental pillar of the global competitive ecosystem.

## The Legacy and the Void Left Behind

Mango, one of the most charismatic and successful players in history, was categorical in his \*stream\*. “I have no intention of playing Melee \[competitively\] again, unless I desperately need money,” he stated. He even joked, saying that if he were seen at a tournament, it would be because “\*League of Legends\* isn’t paying the bills.” His absence, combined with that of Schwab and aMSa, leaves a vacuum at the top of the competitions, where they were constant and dominant presences for years.

Cody Schwab, in turn, reached the pinnacle. He was the best player in the world in 2023 and in the summer 2025 ranking, even surpassing Zain, the 2024 champion. However, the cost was high. In his stream, he spoke openly about the burnout, the impossibility of taking vacations, and the lack of structural support and sponsorship for the scene, factors that led him to decide on a “soft retirement” still in 2026.

The Japanese player aMSa, on the other hand, leaves behind an unmatched technical legacy. Thanks to him, the Yoshi character, once considered weak, climbed several tiers and became a respected threat. His focus now turns entirely to his job, which was already reflected in his drop to 18th place in the last ranking, after being the 6th best in the world in 2024. Thus, the competitive scene of \*Super Smash Bros. Melee\* prepares for a new and uncertain phase, without three of its most important pillars.
