Alan Ritchson in Talks to Replace Jason Momoa and Lead Sony’s Helldivers Movie Directed by Justin Lin

Sony Pictures has opened negotiations with Alan Ritchson, star of Reacher, to take the lead role in the film adaptation of Helldivers. The actor is in the studio’s sights to fill the vacancy left by Jason Momoa, who left the production three months ago. If the deal closes, the feature will mark Ritchson’s debut as the lead of a major studio blockbuster.

The director’s chair remains with Justin Lin, the filmmaker known for directing four installments of the Fast & Furious franchise and Star Trek Beyond. Sony has set the theatrical release date for November 10, 2027, keeping the original schedule announced since the project was revealed.

What changes in the Helldivers cast

Jason Momoa had been attached to the lead role earlier this year, but left the cast over creative differences and scheduling conflicts. Momoa’s schedule includes large-scale productions such as Street Fighter, Dune: Part 3 and the A Minecraft Movie sequel.

Following the departure, Ritchson emerges as Sony’s ideal choice to embody the physical brutality demanded of Super Earth soldiers. In the story, the actor is expected to play one of the elite combatants of the mobile unit sent to defend the galaxy in visceral, satirical conflicts.

Crew and production behind the scenes

The original script passed through the hands of Gary Dauberman, known for box-office hits such as It and the game adaptation Until Dawn. The latest version of the screenplay was handled by Chris Bremner, writer of Bad Boys for Life.

The production brings together industry veterans. Hutch Parker produces alongside Asad Qizilbash, head of PlayStation Productions, and Justin Lin himself via Perfect Storm Entertainment. The project joins the division’s established catalog, which already includes hits such as Uncharted — responsible for grossing over US$ 407 million at the worldwide box office —, plus Gran Turismo, the Twisted Metal series, and the acclaimed production of The Last of Us.

Helldivers’ strength in the games market

The franchise began modestly in 2015 as a top-down shooter developed by Swedish studio Arrowhead Game Studios. Its definitive breakthrough came with Helldivers 2, released for PlayStation 5 and PC with a third-person perspective.

The title sold 12 million copies in its first four months and surpassed 500,000 concurrent players when it landed on Xbox Series X|S consoles. According to Sony Interactive Entertainment, more than 22.9 million people have already taken part in the galactic war, cementing the brand as one of the company’s multimedia expansion priorities.

New names to round out the squad alongside Alan Ritchson will be announced by the producers as filming advances in the coming months.
