Jim Carrey may return in “Sonic 4”

Jim Carrey, the iconic actor known for memorable roles in films such as Batman Forever, The Mask and How the Grinch Stole Christmas, recently cleared up the rumors about his retirement from acting. In an exclusive interview for the film Sonic 3, Carrey revealed that, while he is willing to take a break from his career, he does not plan to retire completely.

The initial announcement of his retirement came in 2022, while promoting Sonic 2, when he stated: “I’ve done enough.” Two years later, however, Carrey returned as Dr. Robotnik (and also played Gerald Robotnik) in the franchise’s third film, Sonic 3. On the subject, he explained: “I chose to take a break instead of retiring. It was just a recharge period before the next job.”

The Evolution of Dr. Eggman

One of the reasons Carrey decided to return to the Sonic universe was the evolution of his character. “My look changes and I feel like I’m turning into a completely different person. Plus, this time I got to play another character, Gerald Robotnik. It’s always a new challenge, and I love that,” the actor said.

Carrey praised the work of the makeup team, especially artist Mark Coulier, who helped create Gerald Robotnik’s look. “Thanks to the support of these amazing artists, I was able to do everything I felt the character needed,” he said.

The film, released in December, grossed US$211.5 million (about R$1.3 billion) in its opening, taking first place at the US box office and second place worldwide. With the franchise’s growing success, Paramount Pictures is already planning a fourth film, expected in the first half of 2027.

Asked about appearing in the next film, Carrey was optimistic: “Of course there’s a chance. If I get another idea, I’ll think about it and, if it’s interesting, I’ll come back as Robotnik. I never turn anything down unless I’m not interested. I love this team and it’s fun making movies with them.”

The actor also highlighted the role fans played in his decision to stay in the Sonic universe. “Fans always give us positive feedback and helped me a lot by asking: ‘How about something like this next time?’ Sonic was created by everyone working together. It’s a movie about people,” he concluded with a smile.

With his signature charm and dedication to the character, Jim Carrey keeps captivating audiences, proving that, even with breaks, his passion for acting remains alive.
