Why Does BBB No Longer Have a Live Audience at Eliminations? Format Change Explained

Big Brother Brasil, TV Globo’s reality show, continues in 2026 without the traditional in-person audience at eliminations, a change that began in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and became permanent. The broadcaster, the main party behind this decision, chose to keep the no-audience format in the studio during the show’s decisive live moments. The main reason, therefore, goes beyond health concerns and is tied to production control. In this way, Globo seeks to ensure a cleaner, more direct experience for viewers at home, avoiding sound or visual interference an audience could cause during host Tadeu Schmidt’s interviews.

This transformation of BBB, one of the most popular shows on Brazilian broadcast TV, redefines a ritual fans looked forward to. Voting, however, retains its power and takes place digitally. To take part, viewers need a free Conta Globo on the Gshow website, where they can vote in the Paredão. The mixed system combines the single vote (weighted at 70%) and the unlimited fanbase vote (weighted at 30%), striking a balance between individual choice and fanbase mobilization. The final result, therefore, is a weighted average that decides who leaves the house.

The New Elimination Ritual

The absence of a physical audience has created a new dynamic for the elimination moment. Meanwhile, tension focuses entirely on the interaction between the eliminated contestant and Tadeu Schmidt, without the immediate reaction of family members or friends in the studio. This format, although different, lets the interview flow without interruptions, focusing on game analysis. In addition, Globo offers alternative ways to follow along, such as exclusive cameras and extra content available to Globoplay subscribers, expanding the experience for dedicated fans.

The format’s future, however, still fuels speculation among viewers. Despite rumors of a possible audience return in past editions, such as BBB 23, the broadcaster has stuck to its adopted approach. On the other hand, digital interaction has only grown, with record votes and heated discussions on social media. BBB 26 thus cements a new chapter in the reality show’s history, where technology and controlled production set the pace, even if longing for the audience’s roar still echoes for some longtime fans.
