Reacher, the Prime Video action-crime series created by Nick Santora and starring Alan Ritchson, wrapped its fourth season on September 16, 2026 with a total of 32 episodes: four seasons of eight chapters, each adapting one Lee Child novel. The show already has a fifth and a sixth season confirmed. The fifth, based on Make Me (2015), began production in July; the sixth was announced on September 28, after the fourth season drew 66 million viewers in 28 days, according to Amazon.

The math is simple and explains much of the show's appeal: eight episodes per season, one book per season and a finale that does not require viewers to remember earlier cliffhangers. Instead of a continuous arc, Reacher works as an anthology built around the same character — former military police officer Jack Reacher, a drifter who arrives in a town, finds an injustice and dismantles a conspiracy before moving on.

Four seasons, 32 episodes and one book a year

The first season premiered on February 4, 2022. The second arrived on December 15, 2023 and ended on January 19, 2024. The third aired between February 20 and March 27, 2025. The fourth began on August 12, 2026 and ended on September 16. That makes eight chapters a year, with running times ranging from roughly 41 to 58 minutes, according to the show's episode records.

The format has an important narrative consequence. Because each season has to start and finish within eight hours, the series condenses the books, cuts subplots and brings characters forward. The writers also decided to make Reacher verbalize his thoughts more often than in the novels, while keeping his dialogue short and direct — a necessary adaptation so viewers can follow the reasoning of a hero who, in the books, thinks in silence.

So far, the production has adapted four of the 31 novels in the literary series. That means there is plenty of material for future seasons and also explains why the order of the books is not respected. The choice allows each year to work as an entry point: newcomers do not need to binge 32 episodes to understand the new season.

One book per season: the order the show chose

The first season adapts Killing Floor, Lee Child's debut novel, published in 1997. The second jumps to Bad Luck and Trouble, the 11th book, released in 2007. The third goes back to Persuader, the seventh, from 2003. The fourth adapts Gone Tomorrow, the 13th, from 2009.

2Bad Luck and Trouble (2007)December 15, 2023 to January 19, 20248
3Persuader (2003)February 20 to March 27, 20258
4Gone Tomorrow (2009)August 12 to September 16, 20268

The fourth season illustrates the adaptation logic well. In Gone Tomorrow, a chance encounter with a distraught woman on the subway goes wrong and puts Reacher in the middle of a deadly game involving people at the highest levels of power. The season kept the book's starting point but rearranged characters and built a network of allies and enemies to fit eight episodes.

The fourth-season cast includes Chris Marquette, Sydelle Noel, Agnez Mo, Anggun, Kevin Weisman, Marc Blucas, Kevin Corrigan and Kathleen Robertson. The presence of familiar faces in supporting roles is another hallmark of the show: each season assembles its own cast around Ritchson, reinforcing the sense of a self-contained story.

Season 5 adapts Make Me and is already in production

Prime Video renewed Reacher for a fifth season in May 2026. The new batch adapts Make Me, the 20th novel in the series, published in 2015. Filming began on July 20, 2026, in Toronto, before the fourth season had even premiered.

The confirmed cast includes Jay Baruchel as police chief Buck Bauer, Kevin Durand as Nokes, Amanda Ip as Michelle Chang and Ciara Bravo as Eunice. The production has not announced a premiere date. Since the show has kept a yearly pace, it is reasonable to expect season 5 in 2027, but Amazon has not confirmed that forecast.

There is a backstage curiosity. Ritchson revealed that the production intended to adapt Die Trying, the second book, but changed plans after Donald Trump's re-election in 2024. The actor said the project had been approved until "someone got re-elected." The information was published by Variety and helps explain why the order of the books is treated with such flexibility.

Season 6 came after 66 million viewers

The sixth season was confirmed on September 28, 2026, just 12 days after the fourth ended and four months after the season 5 renewal. It was the first time the show received two renewals in the same year. The announcement came with a number: the fourth season reached 66 million global viewers in its first 28 days on Prime Video, according to Amazon data.

The performance beat the third season. Amazon said more than half of the fourth season's audience — 58% — is outside the United States, with standout results in the UK, Germany and Brazil. In the US, the season logged 1.18 billion minutes watched in a single week, according to Nielsen, and finished first in four of the five weeks measured.

"Reacher hits hard. What Lee Child has built and what Nick Santora and his creative teams have brought to life is, simply, incredible. Alan Ritchson is Jack Reacher — he's delivered a performance that has captivated audiences around the world."

It is still unknown which book will serve as the basis for season 6. The choice is expected to be announced in the coming months, probably after filming on season 5 wraps. The show also has no return date.

Lee Child passes the torch — and the franchise expands

The adaptation's success coincides with a transition in the literature. After nearly three decades writing about Jack Reacher, Lee Child decided to end his career as the saga's author. His brother, Andrew Child, officially takes over the next adventures. Chain Reaction, the 31st novel, marks Lee's farewell and Andrew's debut in charge.

Lee remains involved with the television adaptations and oversees matters related to the character, but no longer writes the books. In an interview with Collider, he compared the handover to the change of actors who play the same character.

"People find it strange that I revealed the essence of this character, but the purpose of writing is precisely to reveal it. Above all, you want the reader to feel a connection with it and for the character to come alive in their mind. That is the key."

The franchise has also grown beyond the main series. The spin-off Neagley, starring Maria Sten, premiered on September 16, 2026 and was renewed for a second season on October 1. The character Frances Neagley is one of the few recurring presences in Reacher and now has a story of her own, with eight episodes. Revista Pixel has already detailed the spin-off's premiere.

Before the series, Jack Reacher had already been brought to cinemas with Tom Cruise in the lead roles of Jack Reacher (2012) and Jack Reacher: Never Go Back (2016). The television version, however, found an audience response the films did not, partly because Ritchson matches the character's physical description in the books more closely.

Why Reacher became a phenomenon — including in Brazil

Part of the success comes from the combination of physical action and investigation. Reacher is not a superhero: he solves problems with observation, military experience and brute force when necessary. Each season presents a closed mystery, with clues planted across episodes and a resolution that does not depend on prior knowledge. It is a format that works well for binge-watching and for weekly viewing alike.

The yearly rhythm helped. While many series take years between seasons, Reacher has managed to deliver a new batch of episodes every year since 2022, with the exception of the longer gap between the first and second. Amazon is also betting on the franchise with the Neagley spin-off, which keeps the universe active even between seasons.

Not everything was unanimous. The second season drew negative reviews from part of the press; Forbes went as far as calling it one of the worst shows on TV at the time, arguing that the protagonist lacked substance. The series moved on and, with the fourth season, returned to audience growth. Brazilian viewers in particular responded well: the country appears among the highest-performing markets for the most recent season.

For those who want to start, all four seasons are available on Prime Video. Season 5 has been partly filmed and season 6 is guaranteed, but neither has a confirmed premiere date. Until then, the show remains one of the rare literary adaptations that found a sustainable format: one book, eight episodes and a hero who never stays long enough to put down roots.
